Vivid Sydney - Lighting of the Sails - LIFE ENLIVENED - Sydney Opera House 4k

Australian artist John Olsen’s vibrant paintings of life and energy in the natural world light up the sails of the Sydney Opera House in 2023 as part of Vivid Sydney! The Sydney Opera House says goodbye to one of Australia’s most respected artists, Dr John Olsen. His paintings were celebrations of landscape and life, a joyful confirmation of the optimism and creativity that have remained unchanged for many decades. A giant of the Australian art world, Olsen’s work is held in major collections around the world and is part of the fabric of the Sydney Opera House itself. His seminal mural Salute to Slessor’s 5 Bells (1971-73) was commissioned for the North Foyer Concert Hall and unveiled when the Sydney Opera House opened to the public in 1973. Inspired by Kenneth Slessor’s 1939 poem “The Five Bells“ and intended to be viewed after dark, it opens at night and takes viewers into a dreamlike underwater nighttime space. The Sydney Opera House is proud to celebrate Olsen’s extraordinary sixty-year career in Lighting of the Sails: Life Enlivened as his work is animated and projected onto the sails of the Opera House as part of VIVID.
