Fire in Kalk Bay, Cape Town, South Africa - full version

Full version of 12 February 2024 fire in Kalk Bay chronicle. #KalkBay #CapeTownFire #SouthAfrica From Cape Town’s MayCo member for Safety and Security: On Monday 12th February, a call of vegetation alight has been received, on the mountain side directly above the Kalk Bay harbour. We immediately despatched fire crews, but when we realised the intensity and the fires rapid expansion to houses close by, we sent another 10 fire engines. While TBNP and their partners tackled the burning mountain slop, our firefighters took to protecting properties on the urban fringe. Sadly, before our arrival, one property had suffered severe damage and 2 occupants suffered injuries and were taken to hospital. While helicopters took to water bombing the burning terrain, the City of Cape Town’s firefighters kept the fire away from property along Kalk Bay. With the roads along Boyes Drive filled with our crews, we deployed an additional 10 firefighting appliances to the harbour area, waiting on standby and ready in case we needed additional resources. By 8pm aerial resources had stood down and crews continued to dampen down on hotspots in the area. Our crews remained on standby throughout the night. Massive fire raged in Kalk Bay, affecting traffic on Boyes Drive. A massive fire in Kalk Bay caused severe delays along the main road. Cape Town has had a devastating fire season that is continuing to cause significant damage. Table Mountain National Park says that two Huey helicopters, and a spotter plane, alongside the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services are responding to the fire along Boyes Drive, near Trappieskop. Boyes Drive has been closed to traffic as a result of the blaze. Trappieskop Fire Incident Report - Update Date: February 13, 2024 Location: Trappieskop, Kalk Bay, Boyes Drive In the early hours of the morning, 13 February 2024, there was a significant flare-up below Boyes Drive road, necessitating the redeployment of resources to the area. Prompt response contained the flare-up, with no additional damage reported throughout the evening. The Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) has requested Enviro Wildfire Services (EWS) to conduct a thermal drone overflight this morning, which resulted in the mapping of hot spots for ground crews’ to target throughout the day. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Three Working on Fire (WoF) teams, dispatched from as far as Mamre, as well as TMNP NCC Wildfire and Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) crews will continue with monitoring and mop up operations along the fire line. Approximately 34 hectares of veld has burnt, which is relatively small compared to previous fires this season. However, the veld age and extreme weather conditions yesterday afternoon contributed to the fire’s intensity. Despite cooler weather predicted for today, TMNP teams will remain on high alert across the park, prepared to respond to any fire call outs. We would like to thank our partners who assisted TMNP yesterday, including the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue, City of Cape Town Traffic Services, Provincial Disaster Risk Management, Volunteer Wildfire Services, Working on Fire and assisting teams. For those willing to donate water, energy drinks, or non-perishable food items, may be dropped off at the Newlands Fire Base. The continued support for the teams is deeply appreciated.
