WATCH: Zelensky says Bakhmut ’not conquered’ by Russia ’as of today’ as Ukrainian forces remain

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday (May 21) told a press conference at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in the Japanese city of Hiroshima that the eastern city of Bakhmut was not under Russian control, contradicting Russia’s earlier claims. Russia said on Saturday (May 20) it had captured the ruined city of Bakhmut after the longest and bloodiest battle of its full-scale invasion. A top Ukrainian general said on Sunday that Kyiv’s forces controlled an “insignificant“ part of the eastern city of Bakhmut, but that the foothold would be enough to enter the devastated city when the situation changed.
