Hans von Bülow - Marche Héroïque, Op. 3

Hans von Bülow, a nobleman scion from an ancient family, is mainly remembered for his conducting, his career as a pianist, and his status (in layman’s terms) as a “cuck”, which is not of his own fault, but that of Wagner’s personal and intimate betrayal of his greatest non-royal male fan. His compositions, though, of supreme quality, are nearly forgotten today. Marche héroïque, or Heroic March, is something that is difficult enough to be a concert piece, yet charming and brief enough for the salon. Much of it marches in a Turkish Janissary fashion, emulating the sounds of an assortment of instruments, as those belonging to the percussion, woodwinds, strings,and brass sections. And all of this in addition to synthesizing the virtuosity of Liszt and the harmony of Wagner.
