In November 1944, Lengfeld was deployed as a company commander in the Hürtgen Forest. His unit was supposed to secure a minefield against the Americans. After fierce fighting, the German soldiers suddenly heard cries for help and screams of pain from the area in front of them. It was a wounded American soldier lying in the middle of no man’s land between the two frontlines. Lengfeld ordered his soldiers not to fire on any approaching American medics so that they could evacuate the wounded soldier. Since the G.I.’s cries for help continued for hours, Lengfeld ordered his own medics to form a squad to rescue the soldier. As usual, he took the lead and guided his men through the minefield. But just before they reached the wounded American, Lengfeld was suddenly knocked to the ground by a German anti-personnel mine and bled to death. The American soldiers were so moved by Lengfeld’s actions that they built a monument honoring their former enemy. #wordwar2 #brothersinarms Our Voiceover: *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases
