Rest in peace Sakurai Atsushi. When the news first came, I was beyond devastated and heartbroken, and it felt like my world was ending. I didn’t want to believe it so badly, and I cried for three days straight. Atsushi was and always will be my muse--he was everything I’ve ever wanted to be and my favorite male vocalist. He taught me so much about gender and performance, and was the person that inspired me to be and brought me into this world as my authentic self. I was so blessed to have heard him in person this May, and his voice shook me to my very core. I will cherish that memory forever. I don’t know how music to me will ever be the same without Atsushi. I know I’m not a big or influential artist, but at the very least I wanted to do something to honor him and celebrate his legacy. His art will live on forever.
