DRAM Module Manufacturing Process – Kingston Technology
DRAM, or Dynamic Random Access Memory, is one of the most important components in your computer. Kingston has been designing, manufacturing, and testing DRAM products for decades. This video explores our manufacturing process.
Engineering department
All of our products originate with our exceptional engineering teams. As a member of JEDEC, our memory is built to industry standards. We also by request develop custom memory solutions for clients.
CAD department
Kingston’s engineers map out each layer of the PCB (printed circuit board) so that we can submit the design to a PCB supplier, where the PCB sample has DRAM and other components surface-mounted. This sample then undergoes compatibility testing. Engineers test the memory module in real-world environments with specific motherboards they’re designed to support. Approved designs are sent to Production for assembly, testing, and packaging.
Manufacturing capabilities
Kingston has 59 manufacturing lines worldwide, capable of producing hundreds of millions of products annually, operating 24 hours a day. Our production process follows a strict regimen of quality controls and testing prior to global distribution.
We check our materials before the manufacturing process even starts. Our raw materials come from the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers. Next, in the material kitting stage, our components are loaded precisely onto the line, ready for assembly. After this comes surface-mount technology (SMT), the beating heart of Kingston’s manufacturing process, assembling thousands of products an hour. The screen printer is the first step for the loaded components. After solder is placed, an automated inspection occurs, then surface mounting of resistors, capacitors, and components like DRAM chips. These PCBs are then passed through the reflow oven, where the solder is cured by high temperature cycles. After reflow, the products undergo a final inspection.
Labeling
Next, products go through our labeling system, important to tag the product part number and also verify that they are genuine Kingston products. The products are then de-paneled, meaning individual modules are trimmed from the panels, taking on their final form. For modules to work, though, they have to go through Automatic Serial Presence Detect (AutoSPD), which programs them to be identifiable and accessible by computers. Some products at this point undergo functional testing then further assembly for heatspreaders.
Production testing
Before any Kingston product leaves the factory it goes through a rigorous and patented testing procedure. Memory modules are tested for functionality, stress, and performance, as well as visually inspected. There is not a single cell in a chip in a module that evades our testing process (which, on a 16GB module, is over 136 billion cells). If just a single one of these billions fails our standards, the module doesn’t leave our factory. This ensures optimal quality for our customers.
Global shipping and distribution
At this point, our products are sent to our packing department, where they’re packaged, processed, and shipped out to distributors, retailers, etailers, and customers worldwide. Kingston delivers over 1 million units a day to over 225,000 locations. Kingston is the industry leader in memory module manufacturing, from the quality of the components we use to the rigor of our unique testing procedure. We ensure that we send our customers the best products in the world. That’s how you know #KingstonIsWithYou!
