The two responses below are quoted to demonstrate the depth of that uproar: 1. “Iran does not want any Sunni-majority country to achieve a significant revolt that would aid not just the Muslim world but also others in the Global South in breaking free from the hegemony of the worldwide evil pro-Zionist establishment, because such a revolution will undermine the Shia pseudo theocratic Iranian regime, and it eventually will have to accept the leadership role of the Sunni-theocratic government representative of the Muslim world.“ 2. “Shia perceptions differ from Sunni perceptions. Sunnis can’t ignore the mischievous role that Iran plays by sponsoring criminal networks among local Shia minorities in the Sunni-majority states near her eastern and western borders, such as in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria and Palestine.“ It is also important to illustrate that Iran is not without its darker aspects, for which its neighbors have accused it of being foul and subversive. For instance, in the case of Pakistan and Afghanistan, in the 1990s into the early years after 9/11, Iran and Pakistan supported competing factions in Afghanistan’s civil war. Pakistan backed Sunni groups as 85-88% of the population in Afghanistan is Sunni, supporting, first Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and then the Afghan Taliban. On the other hand, Iran, in concert with India, supported the Northern Alliance which included Shias. Iran was at that time concerned about the Taliban’s rise to power and wanted to weaken the Sunni orthodox conservative government that had formed on its eastern border in Afghanistan. Significantly, it was during this time that Qassem Soleimani gained fame in Iran. When Soleimani became commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force in 1998, Iran and the Afghan Taliban administration were at odds. In 1998, the Taliban grabbed control of the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif from Uzbek commander Abdur Rashid Dostum. As a result, the conflict only escalated. Thus, after 9/11, Iran actually aided the U.S. in ousting the Afghan Taliban from power. In Syria, since the start of the Syrian civil war, Iran recruited Pakistani and Afghan Shias to fight, largely as cannon fodder, in the Fatemiyoun and Zeinabiyoun militias of that war-torn country, thus increasing the misery of that country, in which Israel, America, Turkey and Russia have intervened. With regard to Pakistan, the IRGC also even took on Uzair Baloch, an ethnic Baloch drug kingpin from Karachi’s restive Lyari neighborhood after he fled to Iran from Pakistan Army operations. And, perceived provocations continue. There was a news release of a the recent arrest of an accused militant linked to a Tehran-backed terror outfit in Karachi which has been taken as the latest evidence that Iran is continuing its subversive activities in Pakistan. Iran, thus, is not always seen as a benign influence by surrounding Muslim nations. This is something that policy advisors elsewhere would do well to always keep in mind.
