Here’s another band from the Lenin Kosmonol Theatre in Moscow, a band by the name of Araks. Araks started out as a band covering songs from Santana, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, but gradurally grew into making thier own music. They recorded a famous rock opera, The Star and Death of Joaquin Murietta, as well as recording on radio, television, and appearing in numerous soviet films. Possibly the closest sounding band to mid 80s Queen that could come out from the USSR. Unfortunately their story came to an abrupt end when Valeriy Andreev, the director of the band, was charged with embezzlement fraud, turning in his favour 1,500 rubles belonging to the state. The equipment was confiscated and the band was broken up by the Ministry of Culture. Later various group members went onto organizing a replacement group c but this did not see the earlier successes of Araks through. They reunited in 1987 after Chris Kelmi had left Lenkom, but they would not go back to performing live until 2002. Their full album “Warning Bell“ would never be published officially, with a unofficial release by Melodiya on CD in 2014 (which is prohibited for sale on discogs) and a reel-to-reel copy brought out in 1980, this is that copy. The songs in this album would later come up on various other slightly-unrelated albums such as solo work done by Yuri Antonov. If you liked Rock-Atele you’ll love this album, its similarly well recorded and produced almost sounding western, but with a more rock-driven sound than the funk of Kelmi’s group. The first track is particularly Pink-Floyd esque, with Снова весна sounding like the opening theme to some russian-set anime.
