Toscanini and the Philharmonia - Brahms: Symphony No 4 (1952)

Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98 1. Allegro non troppo (0:07) 2. Andante moderato (11:16) 3. Allegro giocoso (21:50) 4. Allegro energico e passionato (28:02) Arturo Toscanini, conductor Philharmonia Orchestra Recorded Live on October 1, 1952 at the Royal Festival Hall, London One of Toscanini’s most celebrated live performances with the Philharmonia Orchestra. We have been getting requests for these recordings for years. Produced by Walter Legge, some have commented that it is a reminder of Toscanini’s earlier art. Although 80 at the time this recording was made, Toscanini’s musical energy is fresh and full of power. Royal Festival Hall is notoriously difficult to record in due to its acoustics. This has been reflected in all the issues that have been offered to date. While our approach seeks slightly better balance, the acoustics are what they are.
