San Francisco Cable Car

Cable cars were invented by Andrew Smith Hallidie here in San Francisco in 1873. By 1947, the lower operational costs of buses prompted Mayor Roger Lapham to declare, “the city should get rid of all cable car lines as soon as possible.“ In response, Friedel Klussmann founded the Citizens’ Committee to Save the Cable Cars. The committee began a public campaign showing that the cable cars’ value to San Francisco was far greater than their operational cost. In this video, you will hear from cable car gripman and grip woman their passion and love working their job including Willa Johnson, the second female to become a gripwoman. #cablecar #FriedelKlussmann #sfmta CREDITS Director/Producer - Anson Ho Executive Producer - Jack Chin Editors - Jeanett Egenlauf, Anson Ho Motion Graphics - Chris Manners Camera - Michael Baltazar, Jennifer Low, Jeanett Egenlauf, Paul Morrill, Anson Ho Drone - Jeanett Egenlauf Additional Archive Footage/Photos - SFMTA Photo Archive, San Franc
