18th Street Strut-Thomas “Fats“ Waller

Here’s a transcription of QRS Piano Roll #3377, Bennie Moten’s 18th Street Strut performed by Fats Waller. Recorded in 1926, Waller’s piano style wasn’t fully developed to his more recognizable style, as it was a sort of “bridge“ between his older blues style (Ex. Muscle Shoals Blues) and his style most are familiar with. This transcription may not be exact because oftentimes after the rolls were recorded, QRS’s J. Laurence Cook edited the rolls and added more (making an exact transcription impossible to play with two hands). This is a lovely tune, and I think it is a perfect example of mid 1920’s stride.
