Samuel Scheidt - 9 VARIATIONS ON A GAGLIARDA BY JOHN DOWLAND [Hauptwerk // Noordbroek]

In this video you can hear my rendition of Samuel Scheidt and his lively and joyful variations on a Gagliarda by John Dowland played on my Hauptwerk organ with the sample set of Noordbroek by Sonus Paradisi. The Gagliarda is a form of Renaissance dance and was very popular all over Europe in the 16th century. The organ piece has no pedal part which makes it well suited to be played on an historical instrument, clavichord or cembalo. It does however also work with Hauptwerk, luckily for me :-) The Gagliarda is also a quite athletic dance, characterised by jumps, hops and other similar figures - that concept is easily found in this work.
