Very tender abscess on chest drained. Cyst wall particles expressed. Incision & drainage procedure.

This patient came in with a VERY tender raised nodule over her sternum. She went to see a doctor a few days before who poked the nodule but could not get anything out. I could see why, the pocket was very deep. She has a history of a cyst there and it appears the cyst ruptured inside causing an inflammatory response. As I have mentioned many times in the past, the acid base shift plays a part here. The more inflamed a wound generally means the more acidic it can be, which means the lidocaine is less effective especially in the deeper areas. The main purpose of this procedure is to release the pressure that’s building and get out as much of the cyst contents as her pain level will allow. She should sleep way better tonight! We will follow up with her soon. Thanks to her for sharing her procedure so we all can learn.
