In the last years of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union agreed on mutual deterrence pacts that effectively diminished the threat of a nuclear conflict. But while short-medium and intermediate-range missiles were banned, Soviet designers came up with a highly powerful weapon that would see action in the new millennium.
The Iskander tactical missile system and munitions were conceived in 1988 but would only go into service decades later, proven by pictures that spread across the globe in the 2010s as a reminder of the might of newly-formed Russia.
During those three decades, the unparalleled missile would secure its place among the most dangerous modern weapons. And when in 2018 the Iskander was deployed to the Kaliningrad exclave between Lithuania and Poland, the West was apprehensive.
