Building An Alaskan Log Cabin - Week 13 (The Clerestory Windows)

The clerestory windows are finally set and I am able to finish up various trim details on the roof. But the work is coming along nicely and I like the way the project is looking. Typically, on these type of projects, where the design is pretty much just in my head, I tend to work out the look of things as I go along. It is easier for me to visualize what modifications are needed when I am actually looking at the lot or the structure. When I started (for instance) I did not have the clerestory roof line in mind, but I wanted to get more natural light into the cabin. And since it was surrounded by tall spruce trees the upper windows seemed the best way to achieve it. And I did not have the sculpted rafter tails in mind either, but the rough-cut 2x12’s just looked overbearing and I felt their appearance needed to be softened.
