His maternal grandfather and father were Stadtpfeifer, and he received training in organ and as a Stadtpfeifer. In 1676 he went with his family to Eilenburg, where he most likely studied with Johann Hildebrand. From 1684 until his death he was organist at the Marienkirche in Halle, where he also led the noted musical performances every third Sunday.
