Shinsengumi… If you have ever heard of this name before, I’m pretty sure you’re a fan of Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X), Gintama, or Golden Kamuy. They are a historical group of men who fought through the time of turmoil of westernization, and are very famous and popular among the Japanese too. I would say it’s almost impossible to find a Japanese that doesn’t know about them. But who are they? Why are they so popular? And why are they called “the men who lived and died with Bushidō, the samurai code?”
