Ukrainian PM: We needs just over $6 bln more to aid its recovery in next 12 months

Ukraine’s allies pledged several billion dollars in non-military aid on Wednesday in London to rebuild its war-ravaged infrastructure, fight corruption and help pave the country’s road to membership in the European Union. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a new U.S. assistance package of more than 1.3 billion dollars, including more than 500 million to restore and improve Ukraine’s battered energy grid. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced 50 billion euros ($55 billion) in support through 2027, while Britain pledged 240 million pounds ($305 million) in aid and 3 billion pounds ($3.8 billion) in World Bank loan guarantees for Ukraine. However, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal asked for over $6 billion more in the next 12 months, while Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking via video link, said his country needed more targeted help in “real projects“ that would spur growth in economy. Meanwhile, Ukraine is seeking up to $40 billion to fund the first part of a “Green Marshall Plan“, including moving forwards to develop an industry driven by renewable energy. External backers have poured $59 billion into Ukraine to support it since the conflict started. And the World Bank estimates Ukraine’s reconstruction will cost some $411 billion, three times the country’s gross domestic product.
