The film opens with images of the family’s home near a village in southern Spain (:32). Mr. Sanchez and their son Juan load into the family cart to head to the market (:44). Wife and daughter; Luisa, wave goodbye (:56). The journey to the market and back will take the entire day (1:03). Along the route, they pass a farmer with a herd of oxen (1:18) and a friend delivering the morning milk (1:36). The milkman and his milking goat (1:42). A housewife purchases milk (1:50). Juan and Mr. Sanchez arrive at the plaza in the center of the village (1:51). A woman fills her pitcher with water from the fountain here (2:05). Juan drinks from his personal pitcher (2:14). He then joins other youth for a game of “bullfighting“ (2:31). Juan reunites with his father to continue the trip (3:04). They pass an olive tree grove (3:25). Olive pickers knock olives free from branches with thin wooden sticks (3:31). The pair arrives in the city (4:22). A fishermen moves from house to house selling fish (4:43). At the market, locals sell goods such as fresh vegetables (5:01) and citrus fruits such as oranges (5:16). Juan feeds the donkey (5:25) as a new truck which had been imported from overseas drives by (5:48). The driver allows Juan to hop in the front seat (5:54). He then sets off to find a birthday present for Luisa (6:19). He chooses a store and browses the doll collection first (6:42). Juan decides on a pair of castanets as Luisa is a very good dancer (7:10). He bargains for a cheaper price (7:29). He and his father begin to make the journey home (7:38). At the Sanchez residence, Luisa works on a piece of lace (8:01) as her mother prepares gazpacho for dinner (8:22). Grapes are hung to dry (8:30). Juan and his father return home (8:46) and they gather around the dinner table (9:03). At the end of the meal, Juan readies his gift for his sister (9:31). Luisa begins to dance (9:40) and Mr. Sanchez pulls a guitar from the way to play for her as she spins (9:59).
