It took 10 years in the 19th century to build the world’s fastest sea route between Asia and Europe: the Suez Canal. These days, over 50 vessels carrying everything, from essential oil products to finished goods, pass through the Egyptian waterway each day. On March 24, 2021, the canal came under the spotlight after a 400-metre (1,310ft), ship ran aground, halting all maritime traffic possibly for weeks to come.
