“World’s Most Advanced Humanoid Robot“ Can Now Have Full Conversations
Ameca, a half-impressive, half-absolutely horrifying robot with genuine facial expressions, was recently shown to us as an easy way for humans and robots to communicate with one another. It’s all very “Uncanny Valley,“ but it’s impressive to see the state of the art in action.
The good news is that Ameca has recently been improved. British scientists have given the chatbot GPT-3 the ability to converse naturally without human guidance. Humanoid robots like the one they built are a reality today; they can move their faces in a convincing manner and carry on a natural dialogue.
While you might think that Ameca’s responses would be scripted, Engineered Arts explained that this isn’t the case.
“Nothing in this film is pre programmed,“ they stated. “The model is given a simple prompt explaining Ameca, providing the robot a description of self.
The Engineered Arts crew probes Ameca with a variety of inquiries in this clip.
Assistance with the disabled, aid in dangerous areas, research, and companionship are all examples.
On the contrary, the robot didn’t appear to be in the greatest mood, saying it was “feeling a little depressed“ when asked how it was doing.
According to Engineered Arts, the robot serves as a testing ground for new methods of human-robot interaction, and in the official video, Ameca suggests many potential uses, from assisting people in dangerous circumstances to serving as a friend for lonely people. At any case, the proven compatibility between chatbots and humanoid robots suggests that it won’t be long before you’re greeted by a robot assistant in stores, workplaces, and maybe even fast-food restaurants.
While Ameca can’t walk at the moment, Engineered Arts says it is working on a walking version, and designed the robot to be modular and upgradable.
’There are many hurdles to overcome before Ameca can walk. Walking is a difficult task for a robot, and although we have done research into it, we have not created a full walking humanoid,’ the firm said.
Engineered Arts has not revealed how much the robot cost to make as it is still in development.
