🇯🇵 JAPAN vs CHINA 🇨🇳 | Highlights | Women’s VNL 2024
JAPAN vs CHINA | Highlights | Women’s VNL 2024. The final round of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 opened in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday, June 20th.
The Japanese women’s national team, ranked 7th in the FIVB world rankings (before the start of the match), faced China, ranked 6th, in the quarterfinals of the final round and won in straight sets 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22), advancing to the semifinals.
In the first set, ARAKI Sayaka scored a block from a long rally to take the lead, and Japan’s block defense worked to get them off to a good start at 4-1. Libero FUKUDAME Keimi, who was in charge of both serve reception and digging, brought momentum to the team with her stable reception, and setter IWASAKI Koyomi skillfully controlled the middle and sides to launch attacks. China took the lead at 15-9, but they continued to smother Japan’s attacks with blocks that made use of their height. They were pushed to within two points, but LING Kotona used the opponent’s block to spike and turn the tide. The final stages were a battle for every single point, but with a service ace from Iwasaki to make it 23-20, Japan took the lead at 25-21 to take the first set.
In the second set, Japan took the lead early on, with Yamada Nichika’s service aces and other efforts. Koga Sarina showed off some pinpoint-like spikes to make it 6-4, but China gradually picked up the pace and allowed them to turn the game around. With a backs attack from Koga and a service ace from Ishikawa Mayu, Japan closed the gap to just one point at 14-15, and then Miyabe Airi was brought in as a relief serve, succeeding in four consecutive breaks, including a service ace, to make it 19-17. Towards the end, Ishikawa led the team with her receiving and Koga with her spikes and serves, and in the end, Iwasaki’s block was successful, giving Japan two sets in a row, 25-21.
The early part of the third set was a close battle with both teams trading points. Lin connected balls to score consecutive points and Japan took the lead at 9-5, but China began to fight back and reversed the score. After Koga scored from a superb receive by Fukudome, Japan got the momentum going and struggled with China’s blocks, but Koga led the attack and Watanabe Aya, who substituted for Japan, scored a service ace to make the score 22-20. Ishikawa’s spike put Japan on match point, and Ishikawa’s final spike made it 25-22 and they won in straight sets.
Their opponent in the semi-finals will be the winner of the match between Brazil, who won all of their preliminary rounds and advanced to the final round, and the host country, Thailand. Please continue to cheer on the Japanese women’s national team as they look to gain momentum in this tournament towards the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Mayu Ishikawa
“In the first half, we weren’t able to score, so I was conscious of contributing to the team with good defense, so I’m glad I was able to respond. I’m glad we were able to score in the second half. I think the next game will be a difficult one, but it’s times like these that are important for the whole team to fight as one. The opponents are also coming with the passion to win, so I want to do my best to avoid losing.“
