Steel Modern | Artbound | Season 6, Episode 3 | KCET

This episode of Artbound, “Steel Modern“ explores the architectural past and present in Southern California. The episode features Danny Heller’s paintings of mid-century modern architecture in Palm Springs, the superadobe construction techniques of Cal-Earth whose experimental designs are challenging the ubiquitous cookie-cutter suburban communities in the urbanized southwestern Mojave Desert, and Jackrabbit Homesteads and the cultural legacy of the Small Tract Act in Southern California’s Morongo Basin. We then visit the iconic pre-fabricated modular Steel Development houses by architects Wexler & Harrison in Palm Springs and head to Watts to see the preservation efforts to maintain the historic Watts Towers built by Simon Rodia.
