Reid Evans - Abstract Algebras and Where to Find Them Magmas, Monoids, and More! - λC 2018

The structures of abstract algebra appear over and over again in the real world from the simple addition of numbers and string concatenation to modular architectural patterns for large enterprise systems and beyond. The best part about these abstractions is that we can leverage the simpler examples to begin building an intuition for the larger examples. So what are magmas? Other than alliteration, what do they have in common with monoids? This presentation will give you the skills needed to begin spotting these structures in the wild, as well as tips for using them to solve problems large and small.
