Originally The ceremony was seen as a way to include the church in state affairs and bring stability to often volatile societies. The contemporary form of the coronation dates from 1902, when King Edward VII was crowned. The first coronation captured on film was of King George V in 1911. This event was held against the backdrop of growing political tension in Europe… The Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen consort, in 1937 was the big event of the early television service and the first true outside broadcast, using a pioneering mobile control van. IThe guest list included notables s from across the British Empire. World dignitaries assembled at Buckingham Palace and various official receptions. Among the attendees were Indian princes and, for the first time, African royalty. Elizabeth II’s coronation was a morale boost for post-war Britain. For a day, street parties banished the hardships rationing and communities came together to celebrate. At the request of the Queen, the coronation was televised so more than 20 million people in the United Kingdom, and many more around the world, were able to watch, as the ceremony was broadcast live from Westminster Abbey. As King Charles III assumes the role during a post-pandemic cost of living crisis, the monarch has taken a more modest view on spending and pageantry for his coronation. And for the first time since 1937, the coronation of King Charles III will include the crowning of a Queen Consort.
