Chinese athletes aim to build a jerk reserve of 10-15 kg above their maximum CJ to ensure the athlete has enough power left after a heavy or suboptimal clean. This is done by applying kinematic and dynamic theory which show that the faster an athlete decelerates the bar then the shorter the jerk dip is and (all else equal) the stronger the final elastic force received by the bar will be.
