SALTING THE WOODKILN IN NC

Here’s Andrew Stephenson, of Hendersonville, NC, salting his woodkiln. Andrew fires to cone 12 and puts 10 pounds of salt(sodium chloride) into the firebox late in the firing. The salt explodes in the firebox. The sodium sticks to the free silica in the clay and the chlorine gas goes out the chimney. Here, he adds a little over a pound of salt to the kiln.
