The Rainbow Fish

PREVIOUS VIDEO : BABY DRAGON BLOOD A not so common but readily available aquarium fish in the hobby. Rainbow Shiners or Rainbow Dace are their most common names and they reach a max length of around 3.5 inches. Found widespread throughout North America, this fish originates from the Mississippi river basin. These fish are very interactive and make a great addition to any Native Aquarium setup and can take lower room temperatures so a heater is not required. Make sure you keep them in a group of at least 6 so that any aggression is disbursed amongst themselves. I find these fish to be a little pugnacious (I’ve mixed mine with Cichlids), so make sure they are housed with quick moving and hardy tank mates. A real sleeper in the hobby but males color up tremendously and are very entertaining. Scientific name: Cyprinella lutrensis. Common name: Red Shiner, Rainbow Dace, Rainbow Minnow Origin: North America and introduced to North Mexico. Originates in the Mississippi river basin. Size: Up to 9cm/3.6” although usually smaller.
