Wave of the Day: Annie Reickert, Maui, December 5th

20-year-old local charger Reickert has been a standout at Jaws’ over the past couple years — in contests and in freesurfs — as well as the Red Bull Magnitude event, and she managed to snag one of the best waves of the morning’s tow session. “It was hard to know what to expect from this swell,” she said. “Peʻahi doesn’t usually thrive on north swells, so it opened up the possibility to surf some of Maui’s more elusive waves. I brought a paddle board and tow board with me, so I was prepared for anything. Headed out early Sunday morning to check the outer reefs. My jet-ski partner and I decided to get a few waves towing before the paddle crowd showed up. I got him a couple and then we switched and he towed me into the best wave of my life so far. It was an insider and doubled up at the last second. I let go of the rope super early and didn’t know what to expect. I was worried the wave was going to clamp, but it stayed perfectly open.
