Detroit Launches A New Freighter (1938)

Detroit, Michigan, United States of America. Various shots of the huge freighter ship ’John Hulst’ being launched. Men work with hammers to free the ship from the shipyard; commentator says “every sledgehammer stroke is a blow at depression“. After sliding down the slipway the ship lurches alarmingly towards the opposite dock because of the suction from the water. The crowds of people there scatter away from the edge of the dockside.
