Redd Holt is probably best-known for his stellar work on drums with the world-famous Ramsey Lewis Trio but he never forgot his roots. Witness this news clip about his “Gumption“ jazz workshop on the south side of Chicago for young, aspiring jazz musicians. And it’s interesting to hear Redd’s observation about black youth being mostly “into soul“. This clip is from 1983 and hip-hop and rap were in their infancy at that point but his opinion is even more valid now in terms of competition for their attention.
