Sulphuric Night / Borda’s Rope (Bosnia & Herzegovina/Unknown) - S/T (Split 2021)

A new blood pact formed between these two shadowy entities of nowadays scene, both evoking grandeurs of the past and a disdain against nowadays scene and its further relinquishment of the genre’s essence. Sulphuric Night continues its path towards a dark and blissful death, ever carrying the flames that made the Finnish movement so widely acclaimed but always managing to avoid redundancy. So is “Passage to the Soul’s Final Rest“ a great example, starting off with a beautiful bass lead and incorporating this time some elements of swedish Depressive Black Metal as well. A very fitting follow up to the marvellous split with Candelabrum released last year. The enigmatic Borda’s Rope also doesn’t stray much away from its path coming from previous releases, continuing with its sound of raw, cold Black Metal, both paying homage to the Scandinavion traditions as being influenced by some of the most best kept secrets of 21st century american Raw Black Metal. Always rustic and minimalistic in its approach, with simple, galloping drumming and deeply melancholic but droning riffage, Nort offers again a great piece of melancholic mystique, always accompanied by the mysterious lore that conceptualizes his releases.
