Composer: Xingzimin Pan
Performer: Rocio Lima Guaman (flute), Xingzimin Pan (piano)
Russell Hall Graham Hall, Cedar Falls, IA, Mar. 27. 2013
Kaidan is originally a Japanese word (“怪談“), which generally means horror story or ghost story. Rather than telling a specific one, this composition tries to evoke a more common atmosphere and emotional experience associated with a number of stories of this type. In order to do so, the composer explores extended techniques for both piano and flute. In addition, the melody from a traditional Chinese folk song, Ku Qi Qi (哭七七,“Seven Periods of Crying“), has been used as material in this composition. The purpose of this song is to mourn the dead, placate and pay homage to the departed spirit.
