Homeless Female WWII Vet Gets Full Military Honors At Funeral

Gone, but not forgotten. On Friday, a homeless veteran was the recipient of full military honors at her funeral. All of the men and women buried at the Jacksonville National Cemetery have served our country, but not all of them have friends or family who attend their funeral. As a Sailor played taps, retired veterans stood guard giving full military honors to Elizabeth Middleton Swanner, a World War II veteran. What makes her story different is that no friends or family attended her funeral. Swanner was homeless and although the benches were empty, veterans with the Florida Patriot Guard Riders say their hearts were full. “Every veteran deserves the honor of a proper burial; every veteran deserves someone there at their funeral,” said John Vincent. Swanner’s only living friend is Rosemary Snow, who couldn’t attend the funeral because she lives in Arizona.
