Visit Visit our website This 1960s color travelogue was one of the series entitled “America!“, which was created and hosted by actor Jack Douglas. In this episode, Douglas explores the heritage and culture of New Mexico. Douglas narrates scenes of Native American ruins, art and daily lives. The oldest house and church in the country are featured, as well as distinguished landmarks. Jack Douglas talks about how the southwest states all share a history of Spanish, Mexican and Native American heritage. Aerial views of desert and The Four Corners Monument in New Mexico (1:12). Pueblos fly by under the plane. A mac truck reads “Navajo.” Rio Grande river spreads out. A group of Native Americans perform a social ceremony dance (2:13). They are representing the Navajo, Cheyenne, Sioux and Pawnee tribes. Aerial views of Albuquerque, New Mexico. A man takes pictures in the old town plaza. Church of San Felipe in the background. Patio Market showcases crafts, art and jewelry. A native American girl shops in a jewelry store called “Enchanted Mesa” (4:28). A white woman shows her Native American style necklaces made out of turquoise, coral and seashells. She leads us to an artist’s workshop, the artist is Native painter Pablita Velarde (5:11). She grinds stones to make her paint. A white convertible drives the Sandia Loop Drive through Cibola National Forest to Sandia Crest. A couple takes in the views of snow from a ski lift (6:38). They look through binoculars at the top of the crest. Sign for Jamez Springs. Shots of wild horses along the road and small red adobes. A waterfall pours into a spring at the Jamez Mountains (8:13). Shots of Battleship Rock. Picturesque clouds frame the Santa Fe Cathedral, made famous by the novel “Death Comes For The Archbishop.” A man approaches the San Miguel Chapel, a mission built by the Tlaxala Tribe and Franciscan Padres (9:05). This mission is the oldest church in the country. A man stands outside the oldest house in the country, it’s an adobe dwelling. A woman and baby approach the Santo Niño Chapel in Chimayo. She places a pair of white baby booties in a box outside the church (9:46). A group of people walk into El Santuario de Chimayo, also known as Church of the Holy Mud. It is a holy place for Catholics who make pilgrimages in the hundred thousands each year. The dirt is said to have miraculous healing properties. Two women walk to a triangle of dirt on the side of the church. One of them kneels down and scoops a little into a handkerchief (10:06). There are abandoned crutches leaning against the wall. Men weave traditional New Mexican blankets on large looms inside Ortega’s (10:40). Ortega was commissioned by President Roosevelt during WWII to create the design for the air force Thunderbirds. David Ortega talks about the history of weaving the Chimayo blankets. Shot of camel rock, a sandstone landmark outside of Tesuque Pueblo (11:31). Wild horses drink from the Rio Grande River (11:44). Small streams rush by in front of the Taos Pueblo, the oldest and biggest Native American pueblo (12:04). Ramon Hernandez plays guitar in his lounge, Ramon’s Room (13:09). He plays a Spanish flamenco song. Tourists tour the Kit Carson Home Museum. Kit Carson was famous frontiersman. Shots of Zuñi Mountain. A Native family walks to church in the at the Zuñi Pueblo. Two Native Zuñis make silver and turquoise jewelry (16:22). A woman sweeps out the outdoor bread oven called a horno. Pan of Frijoles Canyon in Bandelier National Monument (17:29).
