Argentina’s President Milei welcomes world leaders after swearing in

Javier Milei, Argentina’s new president, welcomed world leaders to Casa Rosada, the government house. Among them were President Zelensky of Ukraine, Viktor Orbán, prime minister of Hungary, and President Boric of Chile. President Milei, a right-wing libertarian, was sworn in as president on Sunday. Argentina’s new president took office with a pledge to use “shock treatment” to revive the economy, but warned that the country’s financial crisis would get worse in the short term. In his first speech since taking office on Sunday, President Milei pledged sharp spending cuts as he blamed the previous government for rampant inflation, which has risen above 140 per cent and is expected to hit 200 per cent by the end of the year. “There is no alternative to shock treatment,” Milei told a crowd of supporters from the steps of congress. “There is no money.” Read the best of our journalism: Subscribe to The Times and The Sunday Times YouTube channel: Find us on Facebook: Find us on Twitter: Find us on Instagram: #argentina #javiermilei #zelensky
