★ 4K 🇨🇭 Samedan - St. Moritz - Chur, Glacier express cab ride in a Ge 4/4 I from 1953 []

This will be our first trip in a Ge 4/4 I - a Rhaetian railway locomotive built between 1947 - 1953. It’s a treat for the ears hearing the antique mechanics diligently doing their work. During acceleration you’ll hear the step switch: a selector that cycles between 28 different voltages which feed the 4 traction motors. When we change directions during shunting, or come to a stop, you may also hear the air powered reversing switch or separators. We start with a tour of a sister locomotive at the depot in Samedan. Of the 10 of these engines that were built, 4 remain in existence. The one we look at was actually taken out of service in 2012 and lent to the Swiss museum of transport for a period of 5 years, however due to locomotive shortages, it reentered service in 2016. With the current delivery of the new capricorn trainsets from Stadler, locomotives are being freed up from passenger services, which has already led to a renewed decommissioning of locomotives, such as the Ge 6/6 IIs.
