The Breaking Point - Stress Tests (1926)

Introductory intertitle reads: “Probably the founders of the century-old University College of London would marvel at the mechanical plant now used in experimental research today...“ M/S of man working at a mechanical stress testing machine. It will pull a 3/4 inch steel bar to breaking point. M/S of another man working at a machine. He turns a wheel which operates this machine. C/U of a man holding a ruler against a piece of metal to show the length of it as it is stretched. The bar breaks when the stress becomes too great. C/U of the broken bar. “The impact tester shows how varieties of steel stand shock tactics.“ M/S of man operating the impact tester. C/U of a small piece of metal is buffeted by a larger piece of metal - it bends. A hardened piece of steel is subjected to the same treatment and it snaps.
