In this exclusive Ambika Mod interview, the actress who first cme to our screens opposite Ben Wishaw in the BBC adaptation of ’This is Going to Hurt’ shares her journey from working 9-5 jobs, doing comedy gigs fuelled by Greggs sausage rolls to Netflix stardom in ’One Day.’
In case you don’t know about ’One Day’ already the Netflix TV show is based on the best-selling book by David Nicholls and follows Emma (played by Ambika) and Dexter (played by ’White Lotus’ star, Leo Woodall) over the course of 20 years from a first meeting at Edinburgh university to one of the most tragic endings ever.
In this episode of Reign, Ambika talks about how seeing herself on screen growing up would have helped her as not seeing South Asian women on screen made her question, “do people fall in love with someone who looks like me?” Ambika also opens up about struggling to feel comfortable in her own skin.
Plus Ambika talks very powerfully and movingly about how playing Junior Doctor, Shruti in ’This Is Going to Hurt’ made her confront her mental health and living with ’anhedonia’ which is a numbing to all joy in life.
This is one of my favourite episodes of the podcast ever as Ambika’s story is so inspiring, and she is a symbol of what can happen if you hard work and stay determined! If you are equally inspired by Ambika please get in touch - you can find me across all social media platforms on @joshsmithhosts and also if you need a debrief about ’One Day’ or just some emotional support shout! I always LOVE talking to you!
Don’t forget you can listen to the full interview with Ambika wherever you get your podcasts from RN where she talks more about the audition process for One Day, the hardest scenes to shoot and more! Love, Josh xx
