UB40 - Food for thought

This week in 1979, UB40 recorded their debut session for the John Peel Radio One show, (December 1979). For their session at the Maida Vale studios, the band recorded three tracks: FOOD FOR THOUGHT, 25% and KING. KING and FOOD FOR THOUGHT would receive a studio release as two sides of the band’s first single issued in February 1980. Both tracks, together with 25%, would also make an appearance on the debut album ‘Signing off’ released in August of the same year. John Peel’s first encounter with UB40 was hearing their first gig at the Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath in the West Midlands, broadcast on local radio. The DJ asked his producer John Walters to invite the band into the studio to record a session for the show. Peel championed the band throughout their early years, but lost interest when they began to take on a more pop direction in the ‘Labour of Love’ era. The video here is FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
