“It Could END The Royal Family As We Know It” | Caribbean Nations On Reparations

Commonwealth leaders have agreed it’s time to open discussions on reparations for the transatlantic slave trade, despite the UK’s initial stance to avoid the topic at the recent two-day summit in Samoa. A statement signed by 56 heads of government, including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, calls for a “meaningful, truthful, and respectful conversation” on reparatory justice. Sir Keir stressed that financial reparations weren’t discussed, reaffirming the UK’s position against paying them. Still, there are increasing calls from Commonwealth nations for the UK to acknowledge its historical role in the slave trade, with reparations potentially taking both financial and symbolic forms.
