Washington Today (6-2-23): POTUS on debt limit bill passing: ’stakes could not have been higher’

President Joe Biden gives a prime-time Oval Office speech on Congress’ passage of a bill to raise the nation’s debt ceiling to avoid a default. The bill also has limits on federal spending and other provisions he negotiated with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. We get a preview from the White House Press Secretary and hear debate on some of the unsuccessful Senate amendments offered late Thursday night to make changes to the bill, including one to cut more spending and another to increase defense spending. White House Press Secretary also asked about President Biden stumble fall yesterday at the Air Force Academy commencement in Colorado. She says he is fine. Secretary of State Antony Blinken saying further strengthening Ukraine is a ’prerequisite’ for diplomacy to end the war with Russia and that there should be not cease-fires until Ukraine is in a dominant position. On National Gun Violence Awareness Day, Vice President Kamala Harris calls for additional gun control measures, telling high school students in Northern Virgnia, “Parents should not have to pray after dropping their child off at school that they will be safe in class. They should not fear the worst every time they get a text or call from their child’s school“ Republican Congressman Andrew Clyde of Georgia celebrates a judge’s putting on hold new ATF regulations for pistol stabilizing braces, touting a bill he has introduced to undo the regulations for good.
