The Bad Lands Rock Formations, Do Castles mean Kingdoms? Petrified Remains. Badlands, SD Old Photos

The Badlands Historic Monument & National Park in South Dakota contains innumerable, unforgettable peaks and pinnacles. Today, the Badlands are one of the least discussed National Parks, and yet, before this landscape was protected by The United States and explored, it was of the utmost importance to ancient Paleo-Indigenous Peoples, including the Lakota and Sioux. The Badlands alluded me as I looked for the oldest photographs, until I began to find Post Cards dated to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, depicting the Badlands in much of the original glory. These images did not appear anywhere else throughout my research, and unlike modern photographs of the area, these century-old images appear to show vastly more intricate structures throughout the Badlands. Even more fascinating are the labels, descriptions, and names being applied to these discovered “monuments”.
