Can a Submarine Anchor Underwater? US Submarines have a singular anchor whats called a “Mushroom anchor”. It is located in the ballast tank. So, often submarines will anchor on the surface. Anchoring a submarine underwater is not a viable option for several reasons. Submarines require shallow waters to allow the anchor chain to rest on the bottom. Additionally, being in shallow waters increases the risk of detection by enemy vessels, helicopters, submarines, and aircraft due to the proximity. Balancing the submarine’s weight, movements, and activities underwater becomes extremely complex, as any imbalance or changes in depth can disrupt the delicate equilibrium. Moreover, being anchored limits the submarine’s ability to quickly evade or respond to enemy attacks, Retrieving the anchor also introduces significant noise and delays, further compromising stealth and vulnerability. Overall, anchoring a submarine underwater is not a practical or advisable strategy in naval operations. #usnavy
