OPTION: Jaribu Shahid

Recorded in the ESS garden on July 30, 2023 Experimental Sound Studio presents Jaribu Shahid in a series of solo bass improvisations and transcriptions paying homage to his mentors and to the memories of Chicago bassists Malachi Favors, Harrison Bankhead, and Charles Clark. Followed by an interview with Ben Hall. Jaribu Shahid is a jazz composer and improviser. His first recorded appearance, “Positive Force with Ade Olatunji,” was released in 1977, at which time he also became part of the formation of Griot Galaxy. Shahid held the bass chair in Sun Ra’s Arkestra from 1978 to 1980, and later joined Roscoe Mitchell’s band, which led to his performing and recording as bassist for the Art Ensemble of Chicago from 2004 to 2019. Additionally, Shahid played bass in Geri Allen’s trio including on her first Lp as a leader, as well as in the James Carter trio from 1993 to 1998, with David Murray from 1998 to 2019.
