This town is mostly known for the Memorial and Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau, a former WWII concentration and extermination camp with ruins and preserved gas chambers. This is a place with a dark history. During Word War II Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime murdered over 1 million people. Adolf Hitler was an Austrian-born German politician who was dictator of Germany from 1933 until his death in 1945. Auschwitz concentration camp was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II and the Holocaust.
