Spain: Demonstrators protest against colonialism ahead of October 12 celebrations

Footage shows the protesters performing a prayer ceremony while playing the drums and wearing traditional clothing. “The heart of Mother Earth is crying out for justice and reparation for each of her daughters, sons, peoples who have suffered and continue to suffering the damage caused by the colonisation,“ said one protester. The group also repudiated the figure of Christopher Columbus and the conquistadors Hernan Cortes, Pedro Alvarez Cabral, Francisco Pizarro and Pedro de Valdivia. On 12 October 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived in what is now the Dominican Republic, thus initiating more than 300 years of Spanish rule over a large part of the American territory.
