Description (Français ~ English): “Au matin“ est un extrait de la musique de scène qu’Edvard Grieg composa en 1874 pour la pièce de théâtre Peer Gynt, écrite par l’auteur norvégien Henrik Ibsen. Le thème dans ce morceau est alternativement joué par la flûte et par le hautbois. Le morceau décrit le lever du soleil durant l’acte IV, Scène 4 de la pièce d’Ibsen. Le héros Peer Gynt est coincé dans le désert marocain après que ses compagnons lui ont volé son yacht et l’ont abandonné alors qu’il dormait. La scène commence avec la description suivante: «Un bosquet de palmiers et d’acacias à l’aube. Peer Gynt est dans un arbre, se protégeant avec une branche cassée d’un groupe de singes.» La suite Peer Gynt étant surtout connue en dehors du contexte de la pièce de théâtre, Au matin amène à l’esprit de l’auditeur des images de la Scandinavie plutôt que des images du désert pour lesquelles la pièce a été composée. Source: Wikipédia Morning Mood (Norwegian: Morgenstemning) is a composition belonging to Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt, Op. 23, written in 1875 as incidental music to Henrik Ibsen’s play of the same name, and was also included as the first of four movements in Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46. The melody in the piece is alternating between flute and oboe. The piece depicts the rising of the sun during Act IV, Scene 4, of Ibsen’s play, which finds the eponymous hero stranded in the Moroccan desert after his companions took his yacht and abandoned him there while he slept. The scene begins with the following description: A grove of palms and acacias at dawn. PEER GYNT is up a tree, protecting himself with a broken-off branch from a swarm of apes. As the Peer Gynt suites take their pieces out of the original context of the play, Morning Mood is not widely known in its original setting, and images of Grieg’s Scandinavian origins more frequently spring to the minds of its listeners than those of the desert it was written to depict.
