Over 1 million people are evacuated! Dam failure and terrible floods in China

Natural disaster 4 August 2023. Over 1 million people are evacuated! Dam failure and terrible floods in China A natural disaster is a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth; examples include floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, rain, hail, wildfire, waves, wind, snow, weather and other geologic processes. More than a million people have been displaced from their homes in China’s Hebei province since the storm earlier this week, according to state media. Officials have warned that water in some areas will recede within a month. Rain from the remnants of Typhoon Doksuri hit the northern province of 75 million people, as well as the neighboring cities of Beijing and Tianjin. This led to severe flooding, which left the residents in a difficult situation. Bridges and highways were washed away and at least 22 people went missing. The storm brought Beijing its heaviest rainfall in 140 years, a major test of the region’s ability to deal with extreme weather. Such storms, experts warn, will become more frequent with climate change. According to state media, the evacuees were moved to temporary shelters in hotels and schools. Social media posts show people leaving donations to these shelters or setting up stalls to offer food. The district government in Tianjin also called on residents to help accommodate their displaced relatives and neighbors. Many of the displaced people in Hebei were forced to leave their homes in areas where the authorities released the accumulated flood waters that overflowed the reservoirs. Authorities released more than a billion cubic meters of flood water into flood protection zones, according to state media. No official figures have yet been released on the cost of damage to homes and farmland. In accordance with national regulations, the value of property damaged by the release of water in flood protection zones will be compensated by 70%. The disaster points to the problems facing the region, located in the Haihe River Basin, where five rivers converge. #fujian #china #hail #taiwan #climatechange #weather #flood #storm #hurricane #news #rain #typhoon #doksuri #beijing
